1997 World Junior Baseball Championships, Moncton

1997 Moncton

The 1997 World AAA Junior (Under 18) Baseball Championships were held from August 8 -16 in Moncton and Riverview, New Brunswick.  Games were played at Kiwanis Park (Moncton) and Harold Page Field (Riverview).  A couple of games also took place at Centennial Park Field in Dieppe.  The tournament was sponsored by Irving Oil, which explains the names of the divisions the teams competed in during the round robin portion of the championships.  The divisions were names Supreme (after the gasoline) and Riverdale (after Irving’s no name food label).  Some future Major Leaguers that competed in this tournament include:  Rick Ankiel (USA), Michael Cuddyer (USA), Eric Cyr (Canada), Austin Kearns (USA), and Matt Holliday (USA).

Much like its hockey counterpart, the World Juniors are more popular in Canada than any other country, as we have hosted 12 of the 26 championships that have been played at this level.  This is the only time it was held in the Maritimes.  Other Canadian hosts include Brandon, Edmonton, Kindersley (SK) and Thunder Bay.  Since the point of this blog is to advocate bring minor league baseball to the region it must be noted that bringing this tournament back is one way to simulate interest and growth in the sport which is turn may convince someone with money to bring a professional team to the region.  Another option would be to bring the new Under 21 World Championships to the region.  This event focuses mostly on college players, while the Under 18 event focuses on high school talent.  Since many players sign pro contracts out of high school, the Under 18 event has more potential future MLBers playing than the Under 21s (although they are more polished).

The following is the final standings and results of the tournament.
