1958 Dartmouth Arrows Schedule

Arrows 1958 Schedule

1958 Dartmouth Arrows Schedule

Here is a gem that I found over on the Play Hard, Play Fast, Play Ball! site, which has gobs of information on the old Halifax & District Baseball League.  One of the thumbnails on the site is a scanned copy of the schedule of the 1958 Dartmouth Arrows.  This was the penultimate season of operation of the league, which saw only four teams compete.  The league’s lineup was the same as in 1957, but the Stellarton Albions would fold following the 1958 season.  They would be replaced by the Halifax Red Sox for the league’s final season in 1959.  The Arrows home games were played at the ‘Little Brooklyn” ballpark, where the Holiday Inn now stands.

The teams schedule is as follows:

  1. Monday, June 16 – vs. Truro
  2. Tuesday, June 17 – vs. Stellarton

As you can see, the league played a 48 game schedule in 1958, with each team playing one another 16 times (8 home, 8 away).  Also, it looks like the league favored home and home series as the Arrows played a total of 14 of them this year.  That includes a Canada Day doubleheader which was split between Dartmouth and Kentville.  One assumes that Truro and Stellarton did the same thing that year, given the distance between the two towns.  Also, there were no Sunday games and only one Friday game (July 4th vs. the Albions).

The 1958 Halifax & District Baseball League champions were the Truro Bearcats.  Future Major Leaguers who played in the league this year were Al Cline (Arrows), Lee Elia (Wildcats), Norm Gigon (Wildcats), Vern Handrahan (Albions), Jim Hannan (Albions), and Moe Morhardt (Albions).

As an aside, it would be nice if here we more resources on the old H&D League, namely player stats, schedules/results or at the very least, final standings/playoff results somewhere on the web.
