Mythbusting

AUS SportsToday, something a little different.  I will discuss the attendance of local university football.  As one of the biggest arguments when it comes to placing a CFL team in the Maritimes is that the region “supports university football”.  I am going to bust this myth with some hard facts on the attendance of teams in Atlantic University Sport and compare them to where they rank to other CIS football programs across Canada.  I am not saying that Halifax/Moncton can’t support the CFL, but awarding an expansion team based on CIS support is nonsensical.  Here are the hard numbers since 2010 (as taken from the official CIS site):

Season School Avg Attend CIS Rank Record
2015 Mt. Allison 1875 17/27 5-3
2015 Acadia 1567 20/27 4-4
2015 St. FX 1338 22/27 5-3
2015 Saint Mary's 1080 25/27 0-8
2014 St. FX 2959 12/27 4-4
2014 Mt. Allison 1768 19/27 8-0
2014 Saint Mary's 1710 20/27 0-8
2014 Acadia 1631 22/27 3-5
2013 St. FX 2900 12/27 3-5
2013 Acadia 1924 19/20 3-5
2013 Saint Mary's 1891 20/27 5-3
2013 Mt. Allison 1324 25/27 4-4
2012 Acadia 1794 16/26 7-1
2012 St. FX 1688 18/26 2-6
2012 Saint Mary's 1561 21/26 3-5
2012 Mt. Allison 1529 22/26 3-5
2011 Mt. Allison 2004 15/26 0-8
2011 Acadia 1891 18/26 7-1
2011 Saint Mary's 1849 19/26 6-2
2011 St. FX 1509 24/26 2-6
2010 Saint Mary's 2795 11/25 5-3
2010 St. FX 1950 16/25 1-7
2010 Mt. Allison 1629 18/25 4-4
2010 Acadia 1534 20/25 4-4

As you can see, only thrice in the last six seasons has a AUS team finished in the top half of attendance nationally.  Two of those times it was St. FX in little Antigonish leading the way.  Hardly what I would call massive support.  Granted, the AUS has been crap lately, losing eight straight national semifinals & counting interlock games against Quebec.  The hard numbers bust the myth that the Maritimes is an oasis of university sport (or at least football) support in Canada.

For interest sakes, here is the total when broken down by school:

School Avg Atten Record
Acadia 1724 28-20
Mt. Allison 1688 24-24
Saint Mary's 1814 19-29
St. FX 2057 17-31
