How 2016 Can Am Schedules Would Work for Halifax & Moncton

Can Am League

As I did last year, I am putting together a hypothetical schedule for Halifax and Moncton based Can Am League clubs.  The 2016 Can Am League season will open on May 19 (Victoria Day weekend) and will conclude on September 5 (Labour Day).  The league’s six clubs will play a 100 game regular season schedule.  Due to the fact the league has two traveling teams (not included in the six already mentioned), teams will play more games at home than on the road.

Games will be played against the five other Can Am League teams, plus the two traveling teams.  These traveling teams are the Shikoku Island All-Stars (from the Shikoku Island League in Japan).  These games were played between June 9-30 for a total of 19 games played.  During the same time period, the Cuban National Team will be touring the league playing the same amount of games.  Each league member will play these teams a total of three times each except Quebec and Sussex County will play an extra game against Cuba and the All-Stars respectively.  There is no inter league play with the American Association this year.

As with last year, the league will have three teams in Canada (Ottawa, Quebec & Trois-Rivieres) and three in the United States (Rockland, Sussex County & New Jersey).  The ideal scenario to have Maritime teams in the league is to have two (I am using Halifax and Moncton as an example) of them so they could act as travel partners with one another.  This would work by having them at home & on the road at the same time, playing teams in pairs by switching opponents every other series (this is illustrated in the sample schedules below).  This hypothetical schedule tries to stay true to the real schedule in terms of dates (ie when the traveling teams are playing & opening/closing day).  Some changes were made to accommodate the extra teams.  Namely, the two traveling teams have been reduced to playing only two games against each league member.  This year the Can Am League and American Association are playing a joint All-Star Game August 2 in St. Paul, Minnesota (so this leads to no Natal Day games).

Due to having only two two game series all season (the traveling teams), the schedule was easier to put together than last seasons.  The only irregularities are the consecutive off days in late August (possible make up dates) and the Labour Day series starting on a Saturday.  Other than that, it’s a pretty straight forward baseball schedule.

The schedule breakdown for both clubs is as follows:

  • 14 games (7 home, 7 away) against the seven other Can Am League teams.  This would give as a total of 98 games (49 home, 49 away)
  • 2 games against Shikoku Island (both at home)
  • 2 games against the Cubans (all at home)
  • This gives us a total of 102 games (53 home, 49 away)

Here are the hypothetical schedules:
